Using Photos to Tell a Story

One of my favourite aspects of photography is using them to tell a story. The proper term here is photojournalism.

For many reasons, a series of still images in a sequence leaves a more lasting impression than a series of moving images. Maybe it’s because our brain stores images better than actions?

Below is a Malay wedding I shot years ago, using a fully manual system! Yeah, I was either nuts or too eager. The sequence alone, tells the whole story. Don’t you think this is better than boring studio wedding shots?

Get there early. Not only can you shoot the preparation works but also you are fully warmed up when shooting the main event.

Try to catch mother and bride alone. Framing tight and close adds intimacy.

I know this is damn cliched but this shot always work!

You don’t have the luxury of time to when the couple makes the entrace. Be well prepared. There’s no second chance here.

More cliched shots!

Understand which scenes are important. Find out BEFORE the wedding which ceremonies are important so that you are well prepared to capture them.

A wide angle lens does wonders! Used 24mm here. Had to stand on a chair for this shot. You definitely have to be the most mobile person around!

Below photos was the reception at the groom’s side.

So try shooting to tell a story. Stand alone, they may not be great, but in a series, they truly stand out!
